VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It doesn’t look like our country’s economic picture is getting any brighter. Statistics Canada is reporting more than 34,000 jobs disappeared last month.
December’s national jobless rate jumped three-tenths of a point to 6.6 percent. In BC, the unemployment rate was 5.3 percent up from 4.9 in November. Finance Minister Colin Hansen says we’re seeing the impact of a struggling real estate market.
“The sector that’s the most impacted is the construction sector, in terms of the trade sector, it’s the sector where we’ve seen the largest significant growth in employment over the last couple of years, and now we’re seeing that sector starting to shed some of its jobs.”
The jobless rate in Vancouver was 4.7 percent, while in Victoria it was 3.6 percent.
